Windows 98SE Setup

To create a new dial-up connection to the new MCIS dial-up system please follow the directions below.

Note: The organization of your computer system desktop may differ from what is shown below. Windows 98 is very customizable, and the following is one example of how to set up the connection.

1. Verify that Dial-up Networking is Installed

Click the Start button, select Settings…, then Control Panel.

Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.

Select the Windows Setup tab, then click on the Communications option and click Details

Make sure that the Dial-up Networking option is checked. If it is, click Cancel, and then click Cancel again to close the Add/Remove Programs window and go on to step 2. If it isn't, click next to Dial-up Networking to check it. Then, click OK. Windows 98 will attempt to install the needed drivers, so make sure you've got your installation disks or CD handy! Now that Dial-up Networking is installed, you can proceed to step 2.

2. Verify that the Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol are Installed

In the Control Panel, double-click the Network icon.

Make sure the Configuration tab is selected. Both Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP should be present. If both are present, proceed to step 3. If one or both are missing, you will need to install the missing component(s).

To add the Dial-Up Adapter, hit the Add… button, double-click Adapter, then scroll down the list until you can select Microsoft. Choose the Dial-Up Adapter and click OK.

If you need to install TCP/IP, hit the Add… button double-click Protocol, then select Microsoft, then TCP/IP, and click OK.

Now your Network dialog box should contain both the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP. Select the Dial-up Adapter and click Properties…. Then select the Bindings tab and make sure that the TCP/IP box is checked. Then click the OK button to close the window. You're now ready to proceed to step 3.

3. Set up a Connection Icon

From the desktop, double-click the My Computer icon; then double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.

Double-click the Make New Connection icon. This will walk you through the Make New Connection wizard.

Type in MCIS, or whatever you want to call the icon you're about to create (the title won't affect the type of connection). Your modem (which should have been configured when you installed Windows 98) should be shown in the Select a modem: area.

Click the Configure button. You should then see the Modem Properties option box. Ensure that "Bring up terminal window after dialing" is not checked. Then, click OK.

Click the Next > button in the Make New Connection wizard. Enter the Dial-up Internet Access

phone number: 246-1002 or 246-4005

Click the Next> button. The name you chose for your connection icon will be displayed. Click the Finish button and your icon will be created.

5. Setting the Dial-Up Properties

Select your newly created connection icon. Right-click over this icon and choose Properties... You should get a dialog box named MCIS (or whatever name you gave your icon).

Click the Server Types... tab. You'll get the Server Types dialog box.

In the Type of Dial-Up Server section, select PPP from the drop-down list.

In the Advanced options section, ensure that Enable software compression is the only item checked. Also, make sure that in the Allowed network protocols section TCP/IP is the only one checked.

6. Dialing in and Getting Connected

Double-click the MCIS icon that you recently made. You'll get the Connect To dialog box. Enter your MCIS User name and Password. (This should be the same password used for MCIS email). Click Connect.

If all goes well you should soon get a Connected to MCIS dialog box.

Congratulations! You're now connected to the Internet! You can open up your favorite Web browser and surf the Internet, check your e-mail, etc.

If you have problems connecting, please contact the MCIS Help Desk at 931-293-6247.
